Joe Lavelle 00.54 Welcome to the Velocity Interoperability Podcast brought to us by the gurus at Velocity, I am your host, Joe Lavelle and I am really looking forward to another thought provoking discussion where we further investigate data quality, interoperability and medical record remediation.
We’re going to get right to it today. We are joined by Michael Trader, Co-founder and President of RightPatient. Michael welcome to the show.
Michael Trader 01:16 Joe, it’s a pleasure to be here as always.
Joe Lavelle 01:18 Thank you so much for making the time again. Before we begin our discussion today, could you take a few seconds and remind the audience about you and your background?
Michael Trader 01:26 Absolutely. So, I’m the co-founder of RightPatient as you mentioned, we are a cloud based patient authentication platform provider; and my background is really in cloud computing software and biometric technology.
Joe Lavelle 01:41 Perfect. And then will you take a few minutes and tell the audience about how you serve your customers at RightPatient?
Michael Trader 01:48 Absolutely. So we provide a platform that can accurately and quickly identify patients from any point along the care continuum. So we primarily sell too hospitals and their clinics and physician practices and provide a solution, for example where patients can simply take their picture at the hospital and we seamlessly and quickly and accurately identify the patient, we build integrations into all of the major electronic health record systems like Epic for example. And so after we identify the patient, we enable the instantaneous retrieval of the patient’s correct medical record in addition to showing their photograph and this helps to improve revenue cycle and data integrity and patients safety by preventing the creation of duplicate medical records and fraud and identity theft and human error during the registration process.
Joe Lavelle 02:46 Michael let’s start with this one, could you define remote patient authentication for us and tell us why it is more critical now than ever in health care?
Michael Trader 02:53 Sure. What we are seeing is really an increase in patient touch points along the complete health care continuum and that is really driven by the proliferation of technology in health care and how that’s exploded over the past 5 to 10 years let’s say. And what we are seeing is that this really demands accurate patient identification when patients access medical care or their health care data through connected devices or patient portals. So our platform offers a very unique way to accomplish this with a very high degree of accuracy using any standard off the shelf device like a smart phone, tablet or laptop. So for example patients logging into a portal like Epics My Chart can do so much more securely with Right Patient.
Secure remote authentication helps you prevent medical identity theft and fraud during that log in process which can otherwise jeopardize patient safety and puts the providers at the risk of data breach, and as you know in light of increased threats in that particular area this topic is really top of mind for ,any chief information officers and chief information security officers.
Joe Lavelle 04:07 Could you talk us a little about why it is important to develop a holistic approach to patient ID in health care?
Michael Trader 04:13 Absolutely. Well, the digitalization of health care has really opened the door to many more touch points as I mentioned along the care continuum where patients now have direct access to care services or protected health information or PHI. Health care providers really no longer can view accurate patient identification exclusively from the lens of just in-person visits within the four walls of a physical site like a hospital, but they really now need to factor in each and every touch point where a patient can access their health care or their data. So take for example a Tele Health visit that should really be treated no differently than an In-person visit. And therefore it is really critical that patients are properly authenticated during those remote encounters.
Joe Lavelle 05:00 What can you share with us Michael about your new Right Patient cloud application?
Michael Trader 05:05 The cloud application we launched last year and what it enables our customers to do is leverage our back end cloud based biometric matching system; and that affords our customer a lot of advantages in terms of lowering their IT costs and maintenance costs internally. We also offer Right Patient under a SaaS based subscription model and so the solution is very cost effective for health care providers as well. Our back end cloud is a high performance super scalar biometrics search and deduplication system that can compare hundreds of millions of biometric templates per second with really unmatched accuracy and unlimited scalability.
So, this intellectual property for Right Patient insures that even in the largest health systems out there or ACOs or HIEs can prevent duplicate medical records in real time.
Joe Lavelle 06:01 Outstanding. Michael ONC has been quite busy and in light of their recent duplicate medical records reduction bench marks, tell us why now is the time that all healthcare providers should be adopting new patient ID technology?
Michael Trader 06:16 It is a great question and you know it is a really interesting time in the market place. We have seen or the past few years that ONC has taken a much more active role in pushing health care providers to address the problem and really the dangers that duplicate medical records can have on patient safety. In 2015 for example as part of the ONC interoperability road map, they set pretty aggressive internal duplicate medical record rate reduction goals of no more than 2% by the end of 2017, no more than .05% by the end of 2020 and no more than .01% by the end of 2024. So we believe that in light of these aggressive goals, providers really have an obligation to explore and research alternative methods of identifying patients that go beyond traditional methods and incorporate new technologies like Right Patient, for example, with photo biometrics that have the capability to help them meet and exceed the ONC’s duplicate record reduction rates.
Joe Lavelle 07:21 Michael you have expressed before on our show that you feel that photo biometrics is hands down the best technology for identifying patients in health care. Tell us why you continue to think that?
Michael Trader 07:31 Right Patient I think is really the only provider in this space that’s taken a firm position on this particular subject. We believe that compared to alternative patient identification technologies, photo biometrics is the most accurate, versatile and scalable technology available that the Right Patient platform essentially captures the patient’s photograph at registration then links that photograph to their electronic health record. And with photo biometrics you have the ability with Right Patient to utilize either iris recognition or face recognition, so our system can read the iris pattern from the photograph and use that to identify the patient.
This is well known in our industry to be the most accurate form of biometrics. We can perform very, very large scale, what is called one to many matching where we can match one set of biometric data against a very large data set of stored information. The photograph can also be used as part of a multi factor patient authentication strategy, both at the point of service and at each point along the continuum by clinicians who administer care or anyone else that is involved in the patients treatment. And in addition as we have discussed previously the patients photo can through our cloud back end be leveraged during remote encounters, and our system can use the photograph and the photograph that is captured via a standard off the shelf device like a smart phone to accurately authenticate the patient, and that ensures accurate and safe administration of care or secure access to protect the health information no matter where the patient enter sand exits along the care continuum.
In addition photo biometrics is completely contactless and so it doesn’t require a patient to physical touch a device in comparison to other forms of biometrics, and that ensures a really clean and hygienic environment that directly supports hospital infection control protocols.

Joe Lavelle 10:29 And we’re back with Michael Trader co-founder and president of Right Patient. Michael I know Right Patient is competing in the CHIME National Patient ID challenge. What is the current status and what is coming up?
Michael Trader 10:40 We are competing we are entering the final “innovation round” of the CHIME HeroX patient ID contest and Right Patient will of course be submitting an entry. I think our recognition as one of the 8 finalists in the concept blitz round last year really demonstrates that our initial entry has a lot of merit as a possible solution to solve the patient identification crisis, and we are planning on submitting an entry that builds on our idea and adds elements that make it a practical and fully eligible solution that can scale to meet the needs of any health care provider in any patient ID environment or circumstance. We are not really at liberty to divulge any specific details about the final entry as you can imagine, but I can tell you that our approach is really anchored in our strong front end identity authentication solution, the versatility of its holistic nature.
But I think everybody should keep in mind it is not the only piece of this puzzle. There is also a back end piece that is very important as well, and we plan to include some information that can speak to that even though this particular part of the contest is not specifically focused on it. So, I think ultimately what we were proposing is something that will truly provide health care organizations with the ubiquity to implement a solution that can address the complexities of modern patient identification and provides clean and accurate data that advances interoperability and health information exchange.
Joe Lavelle 12:02 Perfect. From your perspective will this keep the discussion going? Will this get the discussion in front of Congress so we can make real progress on the political side of a National Patient ID?
Michael Trader 12:13 We certainly hope so. I think Congress should also be aware of the fact that providers, commercial providers like Right Patient are already in the market and providing a solution that works, and that health care organizations are using. We have a lot of health care systems that are already using Right Patient. So they don’t need much more evidence to see whether or not this can be an effective approach than to look at Right Patient and what we’ve done already in the market.
Joe Lavelle 12:40 Michael, the biggest conference in health care IT is coming up next month, I know you guys are participating. Tell us what you guys are planning for HIMSS ‘17?
Michael Trader 12:49 We are going to be showcasing some new features of our platform that we’re very excited about. I would encourage any of your listeners that are interested to please stop by our booth at HIMSS. Our booth number is 3015. We are also going to be hosting together with the Georgia chamber and economic development council, a reception event on Tuesday the week of HIMSS, I believe it’s from 4:30 to 6 o’clock. So if anybody is interested you can go online and register for that. We would love to see you there and we will have some great local Georgia beer that will be serving which is always a good reason to take home by and hangout.
But we are going to be showing the versatility of our platform frankly, how it can utilized not only to address patient identification within the hospital, but also as we have talked about during those remote encounters specifically to secure log into the patient portal. We really believe that this is an area that not only a lot of CIOs are interested in but it’s of vital importance. We hear about data breaches all the time, last year the California attorney general issued a report where she came out in strong advocacy for using a multi factorial authentication mechanism to log into the patient portal. I think it’s no secret that more and more patients are being pushed to the portal, really because providers kind of have to do that and it make sense anyway in light of today’s environment where technology just makes it easy to access your information and engage with your health care provider.
So, we think that, that is a really important area and we’ve got a very unique solution that addresses that and so I think a lot of the folks that are attending HIMSS would be interested to swing by and take a look at what we have.
