Kevin Kelly: How to think differently, and why

Joined today by Kevin Kelly: Writer, Thinker, Student, and Futurist. Kevin, who I think is one of the most interesting people on the planet, joins me to discuss some (very) random stuff ranging from optimism, cool tools, the Amish, Asia, strategic thinking, and the Future.

But let me assure you: there are lessons aplenty that you can apply to living a more fulfilling life.

Notes from today’s discussion:

Kevin is an optimist. Most of us are pessimists. Why that matters. And do you know the future is determined by optimists? Why is most of our society pessimistic? How do we change that?

Why did you need to publish a book like Cool Tools? The book’s tagline is “A catalog of opportunities.” Why is most of our society not aware of all the tools and platforms that exist, tools that enable us to impact dramatic change? Why are we content to stand by and do nothing?

Why does Kevin study the Amish (look at his beard above)? Why do we fear cultures that are strange, largely unknown, and scary to most of us? What lessons can be drawn from studying the Amish? Does it really come down to intentionality and purpose? And if so, why are we do bad at that?

Kevin has been a lifelong student of Asia. Why do we fear strange cultures? Why do most of us yearn from international travel, yet never leave the city limits?

Asia, like most foreign cultures, thinks differently. They do most things differently. Travel to foreign lands flexes our minds, and teaches us to, in fact, think differently.

This is critical: learning to think differently is how we engage, succeed, and thrive in the idea economy.

Why are people so bad at thinking long-term? Kevin share some “tricks” on how to be a futurist thinker, and why that matters to you, your business, and existing in this modern world.

Why people fail at thinking about the future. And no, thinking about the coming year isn’t enough. Thinking about the next ten to twenty years is what really impacts.

“Don’t try to make predictions. Try to understand the trends. And finally, try to understand WHAT WILL NOT CHANGE.”

Are we bad futurists? Or are we just bad strategic thinkers?
